Winter has long gone, but not before leaving trails of its presence. Pits and potholes on roads, driveways, pavements, parking lots and sidewalks are making conditions difficult for drivers. While some are small dents or cracks, others are gaping holes that increase the chances of an accident. It is easy to lose control for those driving fast. Steering around potholes can lead to serious accidents or vehicle damage too.

Potholes can also occur overnight in stormy weather from expansion and contraction of the surface or water seeping into the ground. Pothole repair is not just important but critical for creating safe driving conditions. Continued traffic over potholes spits out loose soil and gravel from around the hole, making it worse.

How are Potholes Formed?

Weak roads structures are the most common cause for potholes. Other reasons are:

  • Weak pavement edges, giving way to localized collapses on the surface in heavy traffic.
  • Weak drainage allowing water to collect in cracks and weaken the gravel.
  • Pavement dips, dents and “crocodile cracks” that go unrepaired, gradually wearing down the structural integrity of the road surface.
  • Weak drain casings.

Why are Potholes Dangerous?

Potholes are responsible for causing unexpected damage as well. You never really know the extent of damage when you are hitting one or trying to avoid it until much later. You may notice that the springs in your suspension may be affected or the underside of your exhaust system is damaged only when you inspect your car later. Unfortunately, repair from such damages can cost you thousands of dollars.

How to Repair Potholes

Pothole repair is not a DIY job. It is best left in the hands of experienced contractors who are trained in the procedure. The first survey the damage, assess the repair work required and then proceed to do so with a semi-permanent “throw and roll” patch method.

In this process, the loose debris around the pit is removed, after which hot or cold asphalt is poured to fill it up. The pothole is then compacted with the wheel of a heavy vehicle or a roller or vibratory plate.
