A driveway is a base problem with asphalt on top
Nearly every failed driveway we tear out failed underneath. Granular that was never compacted, a grade that sends water back toward the garage, edges with nothing holding them. Asphalt laid over that will look perfect in September and crack by April.
So we start by probing what is there. If the base is sound we can mill and overlay and save you money. If it is not, we excavate, haul the old material away, rebuild with compacted granular, then lay hot mix in two lifts where the use calls for it.
Most residential jobs run two days: removal and base on day one, paving on day two. You are off the driveway for 24 to 48 hours after that.

What separates a good driveway from a cheap one
Base depth
Six to eight inches of compacted granular under a residential driveway. Cutting this is the single most common way a quote gets cheaper — and the reason the driveway fails in year three.
Compaction in lifts
Granular placed in two compacted lifts holds. One thick dumped lift looks the same on the day and settles all winter.
Drainage first
Grade is set before any asphalt arrives. Water has to leave the foundation, not sit against it or pond at the low point.
Mat thickness
Two to three inches of compacted asphalt for cars, more where a truck or RV will park. It is invisible once rolled, so it belongs on the quote.
Edge treatment
Open asphalt edges crumble. We dress and support them, or restrain them with stone or concrete where the layout allows.
Hand work
Machines cannot reach garage thresholds, walkway joints or tight radii. Those are raked by hand, and it shows.
Residential paving questions
Can you widen an existing driveway?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Widening means excavating the new strip to full depth, tying the base in so the two sections settle together, and paving the whole surface in one mat so there is no visible seam. Widening past the property line or across the boulevard needs municipal approval, which we handle.
Do you fix drainage while you're there?
Always. Re-grading is part of the quote, not an extra. If water currently runs toward the garage or pools at the low point, we correct the slope during base preparation. Where the yard cannot be sloped enough, we add a trench drain or catch basin and price it separately.
What about the interlock border?
We install interlock borders, aprons and walkways with the same crew, in the same visit. Doing the stone and the asphalt together means one base preparation, one mobilization, and a clean joint between the two materials.
Will heavy trucks damage a new driveway?
Fresh asphalt is soft for the first season. Delivery trucks, dumpsters and RVs should stay off for at least a week, and any concentrated load — trailer jacks, motorcycle kickstands, jack stands — needs a plywood pad underneath for the first summer.
